SERVICES

Manitou has a wide variety of services to offer residents including a substantial educational system, health care facility, police services, fire department, ambulance, waste management, service for seniors, day care, local newspaper and financial institutions.


MANITOU AIRPORT CKG5

Manitou Airport Authority, operated and maintained by the Manitou Flying Club. Located just north of town, the runway is within walking distance of the business district. Maintained in summer months only, tie downs available, visitors welcome.

DAY CARE

Manitou offers a provincially subsidized day care center. The day care is open to children of all ages. An after school program is also available.

Hours of operation are Monday to Friday, 6 a.m. – 6 p.m. Special arrangements can be made for services beyond these hours. A nursery school program is also run through the day care center.

ECONOMIC AND COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT

The Pembina Manitou Community Development Corporation, or PMCDC, coordinates economic and community development initiatives for Manitou and the RM of Pembina. The priorities for the organization include;

6. General Community Development

The PMCDC is managed by a board of eight directors;

Regular PMCDC meetings are held on the third Tuesday of each month excluding July and August. Meetings are located at the Town Office in Manitou.

EDUCATION

Area residents are well served with a strong educational infrastructure that provides a wide range of educational opportunities in Manitou, from nursery school to grade 12. Manitou Elementary offers Kindergarten to Grade 6, inclusive, while Nellie McClung Collegiate has grades 7 to 12. We enjoy high quality instruction at our elementary and secondary schools. The Prairie Spirit School Division is very innovative – constantly upgrading facilities, computer technology and Internet access. Students receive a quality education in a safe, personal atmosphere.

In addition to a wide range of courses, the schools provide staff and instruction in French, Music at every level, Computer Awareness and Usage, and an excellent Physical Education program. Resource teachers and a Special Education teachers are also available to support the classroom programs of students who are gifted or who are encountering difficulty.

Both schools are wheelchair accessible.

Post-secondary education is available in Winkler, Winnipeg and Brandon.

FINANCIAL INSTITUTIONS

Two major financial institutions, The Royal Bank of Canada and Agassiz Credit Union provide service to Manitou. An automated teller machine is located at the Credit Union.

The Pembina-Manitou Health Centre is located in Manitou and employs 50 staff full and part-time. It offers the following services:

Boundary Trails Health Centre located 20 minutes east of Manitou is a newly built 94-bed facility located between Morden and Winkler. Medical staff currently includes one surgeon, five anesthetists, two radiologists, visiting itinerant specialists and 21 family Physicians. Services include:

LIBRARY

The Manitou Regional Library Hours of Operation

Tuesday 10 a.m to 12 p.m., 1 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Thursday 1 p.m to 5:30 p.m.

Friday 1 p.m to 5:30 p.m.

Saturday 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

There are 11,000 titles in the library, that are composed of adult and children's fiction and non-fiction books, audio books, videos, magazines, and DVD's. In addition to this, there are rotating blocks of videos, audio books and talking books from Public Library Services.

Manitou Regional Library is a member of the InterLibrary Loan Program, which allows members to request any book from another library. The Library also has a Community Connections Internet Service available to the public.

During July and August, the Library is host to the Story Hour, where volunteers read to children and assist them in completing crafts. They also offer a Summer Reading Program for children in Kindergarten through Grade 6.

The Library sponsors a Life Long Reading Program through a donation from the RBC Bank. This program promotes literacy through a number of different ways that include a mobile book service to shut-ins within the Town of Manitou, as well as delivering book blocks to the Pembina Manitou Seniors Housing Complex and the Kinsmen Haven, reading to seniors, holding workshops at the library, buying fiction and non-fiction library materials, and putting together a newsletter for all residents throughout the year on a quarterly basis.

Memberships are free to Town of Manitou and Rural Municipality of Pembina residents. The Non-resident memberships are $25.00 per year.

NEWSPAPER

Several newspapers currently serve the area. The Western Canadian is a weekly newspaper based in Manitou with a large readership. The Southern Shopper is a biweekly newspaper based in Darlingford. It is distributed free to all households. The Morden Times is also distributed free to all area households on a weekly basis. The Winnipeg Free Press and Winnipeg Sun are delivered daily to home subscribers and are available through many business locations.

EMERGENCY SERVICES

Emergency services including fire, ambulance and police, are provided through 911.

POLICE

The Pembina Valley Detachment of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police polices the area. The Manitou Community Office is one of the five community offices that make up the Pembina Valley Detachment. Other offices are located in Crystal City, Treherne, Morden and Carman. Manitou currently employs a Corporal and three Constables.

FIRE

Fire protection is provided through the local volunteer fire department. The department is responsible for ensuring it provides sufficient protection by maintaining adequate numbers of volunteers and modern equipment. They collaborate with fire departments in surrounding communities whenever required.

AMBULANCE

Ambulance service is provided to the area through the Pembina Manitou Ambulance Service. Trained local EMT/EMR volunteers and drivers accompany the up-to-date ambulance and provide fast, professional care en route to an appropriate medical facility.

SERVICE FOR SENIORS

Manitou offers various services for seniors in the community. Services such as the Kinsmen Haven Sunshine meal program, home maintenance, transportation, equipment rental and electronic surveillance are provided through the Service to Seniors program of the Pembina Community Resources Council.

A Meals on Wheels program, Adult Day Care program and Handivan are available from the Pembina Manitou Health Centre.

Handi-Van services


WASTE MANAGEMENT

Waste management is operated through a local board. Currently, household waste in Manitou is picked up curbside weekly. Waste is collected at container sites located at Darlingford, Snowflake, LaRiviere and Manitou. It is then transported to S.W.A.M.P.

Inert waste can be deposited at the waste disposal grounds located at the RM of Pembina maintenance yard northwest of town. As landfill sites were closed, recycling began to play an important part in everyday life. The main recycling depot for the area is located in Manitou. All recyclable items are collected in the depot located behind the Town of Manitou Office.

The Town of Manitou has 4 churches; St. Andrews United Church, St. Patrick's Roman Catholic Church, St. John the Baptish Anglican Church and Mennonite Brethren Church.

Regular Services from September to June

Every Sunday 9:30 am at LaRiviere

                      11:00 am at Manitou

The 2009 summer schedule for both congregations begins with the ecumenical Ag. Fair Service in the Manitou Opera House at 10:30 a.m. on July 5th.  Following this, the summer services will alternate between LaRiviere and Manitou at 10:00am, beginning with LaRiviere on July 12th and continuing to September 6th.
